A Very Kentucky Day: Derby Festivities, Mint Juleps, & Hot Browns

It is Derby Week 2024 and we traveled to Louisville for a very Kentucky day.

Churchill Downs

This Derby Week we headed to the track for 502’s Day – a day at Churchill Downs focused on spotlighting the community. We kept the community focus in mind while moving throughout our day, starting with brunch.

Hot Browns at The Brown Hotel

The Brown Hotel is the birthplace of the Kentucky Hot Brown so it seemed fitting to dine in their restaurant before heading to the track. We made a reservation at J. Graham’s Cafe inside the classic hotel. Of course, we had to have the Hot Brown. We had the petite version, which was still pretty hefty and very delicious. Paired with a cappuccino and mimosa, the open-faced turkey sandwich made for the perfect pre-race brunch.

Mint Julep at Churchill Downs

Since there is limited parking at Churchill Downs, we utilized the free parking and shuttle at the Kentucky Expo Center. This is a very convenient option that we would recommend.

Upon entering the gates, we took a photo in front of the iconic horse statue and overlooked the beautiful new paddock. In the spirit of Kentucky, we had to have a Mint Julep. Most drinks are served to you in the year’s Derby glass that you get to take home, which we love. Our favorite drink of the day was the Finlandia Oaks Lily. If you like to have a drink but don’t love the taste of alcohol, this one is for you.

We did get lucky! At the wagering windows, single bets were placed and won! Plus, our seats were in section 16 which had great views of the finish line.

After our good fortune, browsing the Derby Shop, and watching the beautiful horses parade around the paddock, we got back on the shuttles with growling stomachs.

The Paddock at Churchill Downs

We made our way to Whiskey Row for an early dinner at Doc Crow’s, a southern smokehouse and raw bar. We dined on oysters Rockefeller, pulled pork loaded potatoes, roasted chicken, and mashed potatoes. To cap off the day, we had to have some of their delicious Derby Pie.

Even though we are Kentucky natives, after this 502’s Day we felt a little more like true Kentuckians and connected to the Commonwealth. We hope you enjoy your Derby Day at the track, at a gathering, or on your couch.

If you would like to go to Churchill Downs but can’t make it during Derby Week, no worries! Races and events actually continue through June. Click here to go to their calendar.

Cheers!
