Auburn State Recreation Area

The Auburn State Recreation Area is expansive with hiking, biking, walking, running, mountain biking, paddling, whitewater rafting, camping, and more! It is the perfect spot to enjoy the beauty of the foothills.

We have hiked to the roaring American River via the Cardiac Bypass and Shireland Canal Loop. It was awesome but were not going to act like the hills weren’t tough! The views and time spent at the river were worth it to us though.

If you’re less interested in getting down to the river or the trek back up, the Shireland Canal would make for a lovely walk by itself.

We smacked some cheese bread and fried pickles at the Auburn Alehouse afterward and would recommend doing the same!
