Black Beach
Black Beach is a relatively new place to visit in Silver Bay, having opened to the public in 2015. This unnaturally beautiful beach is a stunning place for photos and to wile away the hours. Unnatural because even though Minnesota has an abundance of black basalt rock, it does not naturally erode into the “sand” you will find on the shore.
The beach is actually covered in taconite tailings, which is the result of industrial pollution that happened from the 1950s to the 1970s. After those couple of decades, cleanup and restoration projects have restored much of the area. This section of Minnesota’s North Shore is an environmental success story and now completely safe to visit.
