Duquesne Incline

The Duquesne Incline may have been the neatest stop we made in Pittsburgh. This funicular railway carries you to the top of Mount Washington for sweeping views of the city. We won’t get into the history of it – you can read all about it during your visit or here, but we will tell you that it first opened to the public in 1877!

We made the thrilling 400-foot ascent at night, so our view from the observation deck at the top was filled with colorful lights from the bridges, flashing lights from a concert at Acrisure Stadium, boats anchored at the confluence of the rivers, and fountains flowing at Point State Park – all of it glittering on the water. At the top, you’ll also find a museum that provides some background on the Duquesne Incline, along with a peek into the inner workings of its cable-operated system.

Parking can be found at both the top and bottom, and there are options for one-way or round-trip tickets. It is open daily from 6:30 a.m. until 30 minutes after midnight.

This is a quintessential Pittsburgh stop, and we definitely don’t recommend missing it!
