Gallrein Farms

Road-tripping to a farm is always something we anticipate since we’ve really never met a farm we didn’t love….and there was no disappointment in our time at Gallrein Farms. For this trip we were able to podcast with Gabriella Gallrein, so learning the family story was endearing.

One thing all farmers fear hearing is the phrase “eminent domain” when it comes to their land. Back in the 1960’s that happened to Bill Gallrein who was then farming in Jefferson County, Kentucky. Despite the difficulties he must have faced, he was able to successfully uproot his farming operation and purchased land in Shelby County – just miles away from his original farm. In Shelby County he and his family began a thriving dairy, which eventually gave way to crops via the dairy buy out offered farmers in the 1980’s.

The crops have since continued, with the Gallrein’s becoming well known for their sweet corn, pumpkins and more. Today they welcome visitors to their farm during the growing months of the year, with the pinnacle of the season being the harvest month of October.

They have a market and cafe, ten greenhouses, a large slide, a beautiful carousel, tractor rides to the pumpkin path and so much more. We will say, don’t skip the apple donuts when you’re near!

If you’re looking for a lovely farm experience to be the destination for your next Kentucky road trip, you’ll love visiting the Gallrein family.
