South Yuba River State Park

We loved spending a spring morning at South Yuba River State Park. Located just outside of Nevada City, the park is known for its clear water, smooth granite boulders, and historic crossings.

We started by parking in the lot for the visitors center where we enjoyed a shady picnic table and some bagels from nearby Java Dream in Penn Valley – would recommend. We looked around the old gas station and barn that was once used as a pit stop for horses during the Gold Rush. We would definitely recommend doing this, there are some pretty neat historical facts inside.

We did the Buttermilk Bend Trail. Starting from the visitor center parking lot, you pass through the Bridgeport Covered Bridge. It is the longest single span, wooden covered bridge in the world and a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark. The trail itself is known for its display of vibrant spring wildflower over the river. We were a little late in the season, but it was still dotted with color. It was an easy out-and-back that was relatively busy.

There are miles of trails to hike, along with plenty of spots to swim or picnic, making it easy to spend an entire day here.

If you’re road-tripping through Northern California, this park is well worth the stop – and it pairs perfectly with a visit to nearby Grass Valley and Nevada City for a bite to eat afterward.
