USS Midway Museum

The USS Midway is quite the icon sitting in the San Diego Bay. The USS Midway is a retired aircraft carrier filled to the brim with stories from the sailors that sailed on it. As you board the vessel, there are countless veteran volunteers there proudly sharing the story of the USS Midway. The now floating museum was once a floating city carrying over 4,000 sailors from 1945 to 1992. It was a fascinating opportunity to learn about lives lived aboard this ship.

Each part of the ship tells a different tale. From the flight deck, you see the lives of the pilots and fuelers  putting the planes and helicopters into the sky. Take several flight of stairs into the deep bellows of the ship and you’ll see the lives of the engineers who kept the boat’s propellers turning. Each sailor’s life is so vastly different, but equally important to keep the mission going.

On the ship, you could sense the amount of community and camaraderie that must’ve had to happen to keep this ship afloat for 47 years through countless conflicts. If you are ever in San Diego, the story of the USS Midway is one you can’t miss.
