Walk Through Historic Munfordville
Right off I-65, Munfordville is an easily accessible town full of history, including 19th Century architecture, Civil War landmarks, makeshift hospitals, and stories of hidden tunnels. You can actually walk through all of this on the self-guided Old Munfordville Walking Tour! Experience all the charm of the town with local-recommended stops along the way.
Walk and Sip
First things first, a stop you must make before you start your tour – The Brew House! The Brew House is a coffee shop right on the square in Munfordville, just a few steps away from your first stop, so grab your drink of choice and a house-made pastry (you have hit the jackpot if they have their toasted coconut scones) to take with you as you walk! On your way from the Brew House to your first stop, pop in the Munfordville Welcome Center and Gift Shop. They typically have some pretty neat stuff! After this, head next door to the Chapline Building, what is now Hart County’s Historical Museum to kick off your tour.
So here is just some of what you can see on the tour:
Camp Wood – Civil War camp first established in 1861
Presbyterian Church Union Hospital – built around 1834, beautiful building with a lot of history
Village School/Nurses’ Quarters – this one was originally built as a dogtrot house, which is historic to Kentucky
Francis Asberry Smith House – built around 1835, occupied by officers of both sides of the Civil War
The Old Munford Inn – built around 1810, a personal favorite
Richard Jones Munford House – built around 1830, said to have a tunnel underneath
Elijah Creel Cabin – possibly the oldest structure in Munfordville
When You Have Worked up an Appetite
After working up an appetite on your tour, head to El Mazatlan (or El Maz, as its called by the locals) to fill up. El Maz is a good environment and has the friendliest employees, but we highly recommended getting it to go and enjoying it at Thelma Stovall Park. Here, you can also see the last sight of your tour and walk a loop along the Green River after your yummy meal.
