Journals / California / Auburn: The Gold Rush Town in the Foothills of the Sierra Nevada

Nestled in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains is Auburn, California. It is known as the “Endurance Capital of the World” for being home to two historic races – the Western States 100-Mile Endurance Race and the Tevis Cup 100-Mile Endurance Equestrian Ride. You don’t have to be an ultra-athlete to enjoy the beauty of Auburn though. The Auburn State Recreation Area is expansive with hiking, biking, walking, running, mountain biking, paddling, whitewater rafting, camping, and more! See the American River from the Foothills Bridge, the tallest in the state and third tallest in the country.

The Gold Rush town has plenty of history to be explored at the Placer County Museum and Gold Rush Museum.

Old Town and Downtown are plentiful with places to shop and dine. A little bit of everything can be found – upscale and casual, wine and coffee, boutiques and vintage. They also host a number of festivals throughout the year including a fall festival and Christmas parade.

Auburn is conveniently located off I-80 which makes it easily accessed from bigger cities like Sacramento and Reno.
