Cumberland Falls Road Trip & Moonbow Dates for 2025

Piles of delicious food built on plates of cornbread, mountain arts and beautiful views were the centerpieces of our last road trip through McCreary, Pulaski and Wayne counties. Our ultimate destination was Cumberland Falls State Resort Park, but along the way we ran into small wonders – as are often found throughout Kentucky.

On our way to the falls, we stopped by the McCreary Mountain Craft Center. Delightful pieces of original work fill two cabins, so make it a must stop. You can find anything from quilts to carvings, paintings to soaps and so much in between.

No matter how many times we visit Cumberland Falls, at 125 feet wide and seven stories tall, it is impressive. We arrived on a sunny morning, the mist was rising from the base of the falls to create a rainbow. It was beautiful.

After this day we settled it at a Lake Cumberland rental in Wayne County.  There are so many great places to stay around the Lake, we suggest trying to find a spot by checking the Lake Cumberland Tourism Commission.

Cumberland Falls is the only location in the western hemisphere where a moonbow can be regularly seen. We have tried repetitively to see the falls, so a word of advice – viewing the moonbow is weather dependent. A clear sky is necessary for the light of the full moon to create the bow. Also, check the moon timing before you head off. Sometimes the moon rises at 2 a.m., if you aren’t a night owl that might not be for you.
