Edmonson County – Why it’s the Natural Place to be for Valentines
Edmonson County, the #naturalplacetobe, is home to Mammoth Cave National Park & Nolin Lake State Park and the thousands of acres they span. BUT, did you know they are also home to amazing small businesses and SO many beautiful lodging options?? A trip to Brownsville will make a perfect Valentine’s roadtrip – whether it’s a car full of gal-pals, or your sultry significant other.
Is trendy style your nature?
Is hiking, mountain biking, caving & horseback riding your nature?
We think this road-trip has something for everyone you love.
Let’s start in the very beginning… of the longest cave system in the world. Mammoth Cave National Park boasts nearly 53,000 of above ground trails, which include biking, horseback riding, blueway trails and hiking, plus some overnight backpacking. Many of the trails are accessible. There are also several cave tour options if that interests you. You can find out all about the park here. Also, did you know it is home to Kentucky’s 1st and only National Water Trail? Yep. More info on that is also found here.
Nolin River Lake State Resort Park is also in Edmonson County, with water fun galore, camping and more trails. A favorite stop on any road trip through the county is the Tailwaters of Nolin. We aren’t overusing the word majestic here when we describe this spot. At certain times of the day you can catch fog rising from the water and eagles flying from perch to perch, with the rushing water spilling out of the dam, while Dismal rock overlooks it all – just a magnificent slice of nature you won’t forget. PROTIP: Eagles are a common site at the public canoe/kayak launch here.
When you’ve adventured yourself into an appetite there are several individually owned restaurants to choose from. A complete list can be found here. And everything we tried was recommendable!
And what about some shopping before a sweet stop for the afternoon? The cinnamon rolls at Honeybee Baked Goods were fabulous. If you aren’t hungry quite yet, definitely grab some for a bedtime snack.
With the state & national parks, there are an abundance of unique lodging in Edmonson County. Cabins in the woods and lakefront cottages to choose from, plus lodging at the National Park is close too. All can be found at Edmonson County Tourism’s website.
No matter where you stay, there’s likely a campfire ring available to round out a heated Valentines trip. (insert winky emoji here)
